University History and Location
Altai State Medical University is a state university in Barnaul, Russia that operates by over 60 departments and 7 faculties. Founded by the Council of Ministries of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1954, this university was formerly known as Altai State Medical Institution, that is, till 1994.
This Medical University is a non-profit public higher education institution situated in an area with population range of 500,000-1,000,000 inhabitants in Altai Krai. It was officially accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. Initially the enrolment range was really small, between 3,000 to 3,999 students, in this coeducational higher education institution.
Altai State Medical University offers courses and programs such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study and as well offer several academic and non-academic facilities to students, like a library and administrative services.
In 1960, the first graduation of doctors took place.In 1975, the Institute added pharmaceutical faculty, and in 1998 this Faculty opened Distance learning programs too.In 1990, it was the first time when the students took the Dental Faculty. Furthermore, in 2002 opened a University Dental Clinic which is carrying the most advanced technology of dental restoration. In 1993, the centre of Continuing Education started in house system of certification of medical specialists. It was in 1994 that Altai State Medical Institute was renamed to Altai State Medical University.(Under Order of the State Committee of Russia from 15.06.1994 No 586, Order of Ministry of Health of Russian Federation from 23.06.1994, No 127)
In 2001, the University offered medical-prophylactic faculty.In 2004 the Faculty of Higher Nursing Educationwas established.
Since 1967, the University has a specialized council for defence of candidate, from 1995 – doctoral theses. The University has trained more than 20000 graduates.
Academic staff of the University consists of more than 100 doctors and 350 candidates of science, 3 Corresponding Members of RAMS (ZS Barkagan, VIKiselev, YN Scheu-hat), 5 Honoured Scientists of Russia (ZS Barkagan VB Gervasi, L. Tarasov, G. Trubnikov, YN Shoikhet), 25 distinguished physicians Russia and 10 honoured workers of the Graduate School. Among university graduates two academicians (NF Gerasimenko, VYSemke), Honorary Citizen of the city of Barnaul prof. AF Lazarev.
The six faculties of the university are: The Faculties of General Medicine, Pediatrics, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Preventive Medicine and Advanced Nursing. These collectively train approximately 5000 students a year.
An extensive post graduate program as well as a retraining program for medical personnelare too carried out here. On-going professional development of ASMU students and postgraduates happens at the Institute of Pre-University Training and the Institute of Postgraduate Training.
Students and specialists from 16 countries study at ASMU, and these countries include: Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tadzhikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and others.
In 2016 the Faculty of Foreign Students was established with students trained in General Medicine and Dentistry in the English Language for the first two years, and an intensive course of the Russian Language starts in the third year. This allows them to visit the clinical departments.
