The university was established on September 1st 1939. It began with the recruitment of 200 students. It is located in Bishkek. It is officially known as Kyrgyz State Medical University and it was named after I K Akhunbaev. Moscow Medical Institute, High Medical Schools of St Petersburg Almaty and other medical institutions contributed to the establishment of the school. The first graduation of students was in 1943. The school began its 6-year training program after the end of the war. It formed relations with scientific institutions of the Soviet Republic. In 1996 by the decree of the President of the Republic, the university was reorganized to Kyrgyz State Medical Academy.

University Introduction:

The university educates students in undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The undergraduate programs take 5-6 years while the postgraduate programs take 2-3 years. The medium of education in the school is in English and Russian. Scientific research in the school involves the Central Research Laboratory in the school, Scientific Student Society, Council of Young Scientists and annual International Conferences of Students and Young Scientists.


The faculties within the school include General medicine 1 and 2, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medical and Preventive care, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Postgraduate and Medical Education, KSMA Medical School.

Campus Life:

Student activities involve Annual students Initiation and festivals such as the ‘star hour’. International students get involved in friendship evenings, Russian language evening and study tours. The university also has a students’ council, debate club, a trade union committee of students and scientific clubs for students.


The university has 8 hostels. The hostels have a kitchen where students can cook for themselves. Each block has a shower room, toilet, and a wash basin. It has 2 or more bedrooms in each block. Each hostel hosts 200+ students. The hostels have internet access, a reading hall and an infirmary.
