The Kyrgyz State Medical Academy, also known as KSMU is one of the oldest medical universities of Kyrgyzstan. It came into establishment in 1939 with the recruitment of mere 200 students. Universities viz. the First Moscow Medical Institute, high medical schools of Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Taskent and much more contributed to the establishment of it in the capital of Kyrgyzstan i.e. Bishkek. They provided knowledge and governmental support, medical strategies and training books as well as faculty staff. At present, Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is considered as the pioneer among all medical colleges in Kyrgyzstan. There are more than 540 mentors serving this great institution and more than 4,000 students are studying MBBS. Majorly, foreign students are from India doing MBBS in Bishkek.

Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is accredited by World Health Organization (WHO), FAIMER, IMED as well as by Medical Council of India (MCI). Students can appear for USMLE, PLAT, NZREX, etc. for further studies in countries like USA, UK, New Zealand, etc. KSMU conducts some mutual programs with renowned universities around the globe and also has medical students exchange programs with the help of which students can practice in other countries during vacations or when needed as directed by the academy.The students also get the opportunity to practice in several hospitals of the city to gain useful experience.The Academy strives to apply most advanced technology and modern methods in educating foreign students.

The Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is the leader of medical education in the Kyrgyz Republic and most dynamically developing an institute of higher education in Central Asia. In KSMU work the 526 teachers, among them 86 professors and doctors of medical sciences, 315 candidates of medical sciences and associate professors. The academy prepares doctors for the countries of far and near abroad; training is conducted in Russian and English languages.The university awards the degree of M.D. (Physician) equivalent to MBBS degree in India to the aspirants after successful completion of medical studies.


600 highly qualified faculty members among whom some are academicians of Kyrgyz Republic while some are members of NAS Kyrgyzstan and the candidates of science with Ph.D. degrees carry out teaching at the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy. The University has the following faculties:

The General Medicine is the amplest faculty with themajority of students from abroad as well as locals.  General Medicine facultythe only one that is available in English medium for foreigner students. The English medium faculty is highly experienced, skilled &proficient in teaching foreign students.  While all other courses available in KSMU are in Russian / Kyrgyz language only.

Apart from General Medicine, Stomatology andpaediatrics is also available for foreigners.Therefore, students can continue their education in a various discipline like surgery, therapy, neonatology, ophthalmology, gynaecology, obstetrics, haematology, paediatrics, etc after completing their graduation.  Furthermore, the medical library of KSMA is one of the biggest in the whole of Kyrgyzstan including more than 4,00,000 books, with 16 branches and five reading halls.The library comprises of digital reading material in CD’s offering suitable videos and illustrations too, which will help students to understand their stream of knowledge very well.The electronic library in Kyrgyz State Medical Academy was established in the year 2005. There are two reading halls with computers with medical education materials.

Training at the Academy

In 2000, at KSMU, began prologue of the new training programs tailored to the international standards. Kyrgyz State Medical Academy offers both governments supported training and on a contractual basis.Besides, the Institute of post-graduate training of KSMA, Research Institute of fundamental problems of medicine and biology and the Center of the International Cooperation is functioning.Best teachers of the Kyrgyz Republic in groups conduct the training comprising ofa small number of students.

Admission in KSMU

The MBBS admissions in Kyrgyz are already ongoing for the session 2017 for Indian students. The course duration is 6 years in Kyrgyz State Medical Academy and the medium of education will be English and Russian. All candidates’ mark-sheets are thoroughly screened for their eligibility before admission in Kyrgyz State Medical Academy. The documents that need to be submitted by eligible candidates for admission here are

  • intermediate/secondary education/12th mark-sheets & certificates
  • valid passport
  • 20 passport size photographs
  • duly filled and signed application form.
  • Academic transcripts with the detail of subjects studied at the previous medical institute.

Kyrgyz State Medical Academy has hostels for lodging of foreign students spread throughout the city. There are separate hostels for boys and girls with all amenities. In addition, international students live in the student’s hostel close to the institution, in well-equipped and furnished single or double rooms. Free Wi-Fi is also accessible in every room. In the hostel building, there is the student’s canteen with a snack bar and billiard parlor, working as a cafe in the evening. 24×7 hours warm and cold water is available in the hostel. In the hostel, a mess facility is there and some cooks are Indian as well but mostly foreign students prefer self-cooking. Due to these features, hostel becomes the second home for the student.
