The university accepted its first students in 1871, making it the 3rd oldest university in Oceania and the oldest university in New Zealand. The university was a part of the Federal University of New Zealand between 1874 and 1961 and it issued degrees in its name. University Introduction:

University of Otago and Dunedin college of Education merged on January 2007. The main campus is located in Dunedin and it hosts the main administration. The university was the first in New Zealand to permit women to take a law degree. The Auckland campus provides various teaching and distance learning courses and acts as a liaison with the wider Auckland community and Alumni.
