Akaki Tsereteli State University was established in 1930 in Tbilisi, Georgia. It is currently located in Kutaisi, and is also known as Kutaisi University. It was established on the basis of Tbilisi State University. Its name changed to Akaki Tsereteli State University in 1990. It was named after Akaki Tsereteli, a national liberation movement figure, and a Georgian poet. It is considered one of the oldest higher education institutions in Georgia.

The school was formed in 1930. It has international relations with scientific and educational institutions of other countries. This is thanks to the university’s foreign relations and development service that was established in 1994. Additionally, it organizes scholarships and exchange programs for its students. It has partner universities in the US, UK, Czech Republic, Portugal, Estonia, Spain and many others. International associations tied to the school include WHO, International Association of University Presidents, International Association for Medical Education, and International Association of Medical Schools in Europe.
The faculties in the school include the Faculty of Humanitarian, Pedagogics, Exact and Natural Sciences, Law and Social Sciences, Business, Medicine, Technical and Engineering, Technological Engineering, Maritime Transportation, and Agriculture.
The students have a support and development office which supports career development and handles the Alumni network. It has a Fablab that was established in 2015. It is the first digital fabrication lab in Kutaisi. The school library has more than one million volumes. It has access to the digital journals, databases, and web resources. Additionally, it has a range of cultural and sporting activities. This includes the dance ensemble, folk ensemble, football, basketball, volleyball, martial arts, table tennis and climbing club. Another facility in the school is the ATSU lifelong learning center.
The school has a well-equipped hostel area. It has a dining area, high security, a 24/7 emergency facility, a warden, and an emergency doctor.
