It was established in 2003 in Bonaire but later relocated to Curacao. Upon its relocation it changed its name to Avalon University School of Medicine to differentiate itself from another university with the same name. Administrative offices for the university are located in Youngstown, Ohio.
The Doctor of Medicine curriculum takes 4 years. Basic Science courses for first- and second-year students are studied in the Curacao campus. For orientation in clinical studies, overview of US residency application and preparation for the USMLE 1 exams, third year students attend an 8-week course in Youngstown, Ohio at the admissions office.
