It is among the 50 oldest private universities and the second oldest universities in the United States. The university was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The university offers about 20 residence halls for the students. It is mandatory for the students o stay on campus for the first year. Indian food is available in the residence halls. Sports facilities are also available on the hostel premises.
