Isfahan University of Medical Sciences was established in 1946. It was known as Isfahan Higher School of Health education. It was established by Great Avicenna under the patronage of Allah-al-Dowleh, the Kakouid ruler. It is considered to be one of the world’s oldest universities with classes conducted as early as 1024. Students were then admitted for the MD degrees that took 6 years of medical training courses. With time, the university offered programs in human sciences, engineering, and medical sciences. Although these were the initial programs of the university, they were separated and became independent. University of Isfahan became Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 1985.

It is a university that specializes in basic medical sciences, clinical science, and health services. It is located in Hezarjarib street in Southern Isfahan. It has 10 faculties and 75 main departments. It has 75 hospitals making it a regional health care provider. Additionally, it is the main medical center in Isfahan Province and Central Iran.

It has 939 faculty members. The schools within the university include; School of Health, School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Nutrition and Food Sciences, School of Dentistry, School of Rehabilitation Sciences, school of Allied Medical Sciences, School of Advanced Technologies in Medical Sciences, School of Management and Medical Information Sciences.
