JSC Astana Medical University was established in October 1964. The Council of Ministers of the republic, in 1964, had a resolution of opening a medical institution in Tselinograd. By November 1964, the school had 15 lecturers in the institute. In 1997, the institute became an Academy and in 2009, it gained the university status. The alteration in name and status led to an increase in a number of courses and students. The university also introduced the three-tiered system of education; Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees.
