JSC Astana Medical University was established in October 1964. The Council of Ministers of the republic, in 1964, had a resolution of opening a medical institution in Tselinograd. By November 1964, the school had 15 lecturers in the institute. In 1997, the institute became an Academy and in 2009, it gained the university status. The alteration in name and status led to an increase in a number of courses and students. The university also introduced the three-tiered system of education; Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees.

The university enjoys a high reputation in the higher medical education sphere. The university has been steadily ranked as the best university in Kazakhstan. The university academic partners are foreign universities in the United States, Singapore, Europe and Russia. The University was formerly known as JSC Kazakh Medical Academy. In 2009, it changed to JSC Astana Medical University. It has 2 dissertational boards and 8 specialized scientific seminars functioning at the campus.
The university has 5 main faculties that consist of 60 departments offering 10-degree choices. The Faculties include Faculty of public Health and Management, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, and Faculty of Nursing.
There are 5 university buildings. A student café as well as buffets serving hygienic foods can be accessed inside the university buildings. It has a well-established library that contains scientific periodicals, books and academic journals. These books are available in Russian, Kazakh and English. The university also promotes a healthy way of life through sporting activities. They include ju-jitsu, Kazakh fight, football, volleyball, table tennis and chess. The trainers are well experienced coaches.
The university has 2 halls of residence. Accommodation is secured on a first come first serve basis. The rooms are well ventilated. Students are allowed to use reading rooms, laundry rooms, and living rooms.
