King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakistan

The medical university was established in 1860, and it was known as Lahore Medical School. It is the fourth oldest medical institution in South Asia. In 1868, the University was granted the kind of privilege given to students from English schools. The university became an affiliate of the University of Punjab in 1871. In the same year, it replaced the Anarkali dispensary by adding Mayo Hospital as an affiliate hospital. It added a second teaching hospital in 1887. Its first academic building was completed in 1883. After Pakistan’s independence in 2010, it became the only medical college in Pakistan. It currently oversees 7 tertiary hospitals.

University Introduction:

Lahore Medical College was renamed King Edward Medical College in December 1911. It was named in the honor of the Late King and Emperor. The university’s status was elevated to independent, degree granting institution on May 2005. Its name also changed to King Edward Medical University. The university is headed by a Vice Chancellor known as Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal. It has over 1300 undergraduate and 800 postgraduate students. Among the doctors pursuing postgraduate degree, 500 are doing residencies under College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Faculty:

The university has various schools and departments. Some of the departments are Departments of Basic Sciences, Medicine and Allied Departments, and Surgery and Allied Departments. It has the School of Nursing, School of Paramedical, School of Physiotherapy and School of Orthopedic Technology. 

Campus Life:

The university offers auxiliary services such as a library, computer labs and WIFI services. It also has various student societies. No unions are allowed in the school. Some of the student societies include Drama Society, Sports club and Arts and Photography society. The school magazine is maintained by students. Additional facilities include Center for Nuclear Medicine, Convalescent Center, and College of Ophthalmology and Allied Vision Sciences.

The university provides accommodation. Both boys and girls have their own hostels.
