In 1933, Donglu University initiated a specialized associate program in medicine which has since evolved and grown into the present Kunming Medical University. In 1956, the university became an independent 6 key higher education institution in the province. Kunming Medical University has consistently been the largest specialized medical university in Yunnan and leads the way in medical education, scientific research, medical services, and social service. The university vividly focuses on higher level medical education and the development of medical and healthcare in Yunnan Province.

The university also conferred the titles of honorary professor and guest professor to more than 60 foreign scholars till date.
Kunming Medical University has been carrying out extensive scientific research on Yunnan’s frequently encountered diseases and has consistently used the most advanced technologies for diagnosis and treatment. The university is involved in several phases of scientific research including basic research, applied research, and developmental research, involving multiple subjects and multiple specialities. Kunming Medical University provides on-campus hostel to international students. International Student Dormitory is well-equipped and avails double room and suite for international students. Male and female students are provided with separate accommodations. International students living in school dormitories should observe Regulations on International Student Dormitory Management. All rooms are equipped with private bathroom and toilet, wardrobe, desk, chair, and Internet access. Some rooms are equipped with air-conditioner as well. Apart from the hostel fee, students are required to pay the cost of electricity, water, and internet according to their usage.
