It was later changed in 2009 to National Research Nuclear university. One of the founding fathers of the university was academician Igor Vasilyevich. He was the head of the Soviet Nuclear project and is best known as the father of the atomic bomb. In the 1960s the university was considered one of the best learning institutions in Russia. This is because it provided comprehensive education and concerning peaceful nuclear energy.

National Research Nuclear University was formed in the 1960s. Specifically in the middle of World War 2. The university was formed to educate people on the nuclear industry.
