Philipps University, Germany

Landgrave Phillip established the Philipps University of Marbug in 1527. It started out as a protestant University. It is considered to be one of the oldest universities in Germany, and the oldest protestant university that is still operating. Currently, it doesn’t have any religious affiliation. It is a public university of the State of Hesse.

The university begun with four subjects. They included Theology, Medicine, Law, and Philosophy. Today, it has 16 departments offering a wide range of disciplines in the Natural Sciences and Liberal Arts. It established the world’s first professorship in Chemistry in 1609. In 2012, it opened Chemicum, the first German interactive chemistry museum.

University Introduction:

Philips University offers undergraduate programs, graduate programs, and short term programs. The school works closely with other institutions. It has 5 museums, a chemical center, two botanical gardens and a variety of special scientific collections. The departments of psychology and geography in the school enjoy a great reputation. So much so in 2009, they reached the Excellence Group Status in the Europe Wide CHE Excellence Ranking.


The disciplines in the school include Social Sciences and Philosophy, Economics, Law, Foreign Language Philologies, Mathematics and Computer Science, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Physics, Educational Sciences, Medicine, Geography, Biology History and Cultural Studies, German and Art Studies, Protestant Theology and Psychology.

Campus Life:

Students, no matter their home country are encouraged and allowed to do jobs as student assistants at the university. The university hosts educational and Cultural events annually such as trainings and international potluck fests. Students can get involved in voluntary programs and student initiatives. 


Foreign students can apply for a room in student housing when they are completing their application form. Eligible students are encouraged to apply.  Students also have the option of living in private housing.
