This is a public research university located in Malaysia. It was established on June 1969 as a statutory body with its own constitution. The university is one of the oldest learning universities located in Northern Malaysia. The university has 3 campuses which are the main campus on the Island of Penang, a Health campus in Kelanton, and an Engineering campus in Nibong Tebal. The university is offering Doctor of Medicine undergraduate degree in collaboration with KLE University, India. It also intends on establishing a global campus in Kuala Lumpur. It is considered as one of the largest universities in Malaysia in terms of enrollment with about 28,300 postgraduate and undergraduate students in 2009.

The university was initially known as Universiti Pulau Pinang. It was run in borrowed premises from the time it was established until 1971 when it moved to its present site. The university’s mission is to transform higher education for a sustainable tomorrow. Its vision is to be a pioneering, transdisciplinary research university that empowers future talents. The management of the university is done through the executive power of the board of directors. It also has a vice chancellor assisted by 3 deputy vice chancellors. The university was awarded the Asian Innovation Award with USM emerging as the only winner from its country.
The schools in the university include Technology based schools, Liberal Art Schools, Science Schools and Health Science Schools. The various fields of study include Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Building Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities and Education.
The university offers distance education program through the school of Distance education. The university provides accommodation, sporting and recreation facilities. Cafeterias are available around the university area.
The hostels are available on every campus. The main campus has 6 hostels while the rest have one each. Accommodation caters to approximately 75% of the students
