University of California

The University of California was established in March 23, 1868, and is located in the State of California. The Public research university currently consists of 10 campuses. The campuses are at Berkley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, San Diego, Riverside, San Francisco, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz. Before moving to Berkley, the university operated in Oakland. From 1957 to 1960, the university developed into a university.

The school has a student body of up to 273,179 students and 22,700 faculty members. The newest campus to be opened was in 2005 and is the Merced campus. Nine of the campuses enroll both graduate and undergraduate students. One campus, the UC San Francisco campus, only enrolls graduate and professional students in medical and health sciences. The university also has an affiliate university in San Francisco.

The school faculty and researchers have been awarded 69 Nobel Prizes as of 2020. The faculty and researchers are also responsible for 1803 inventions. The university is a part of the government’s three system public higher education plan. University of California is governed by a board of regents with autonomy from the rest of the state government. This autonomy is protected by the state constitution. Various campuses of the university are members of the Association of American Research universities. 


Schools and departments in the university include Department of Ethnic Studies, Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, School of Social Welfare, Department of History, School of Physical Sciences, Graduate School of Education, School of Optometry Professional Program, Department of Viticulture and Enology, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, School of Social Ecology, School of Biological Sciences, College of Engineering and Institute for Water Resources.

The university library has more than 40,000 million volumes. Other than the campus libraries, the university also has regional library facilities.
