The institution is a research university that is located in Sokoto, Northwest Nigeria. It was named after the founder of the Sokoto caliphate Usman dan Fodio. It was formerly known as the University of Sokoto. It was established in 1975 as one of the twelve universities founded by the Federal government. The degree awarding institution also runs remedial programs and associate degrees. The university’s development started on a temporary site currently known as the City campus. Classes began in October 1977 with ninety-three undergraduate students. The programs offered included Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts/ Science and Bachelor of Science with an academic staff of 33 professionals.

It is divided into three campuses to accommodate various programs. The school of postgraduate studies, the university senate and the main library complex are located in the main campus. Faculties located in the school are Arts and Languages, Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Science, Law, and Social Sciences. The annex campus houses the Faculty of veterinary medicine with the veterinary teaching hospital, the school of remedial Programme and the center for Islamic studies. The third campus hosts Faculty of Pharmaceutical sciences and College of Health Sciences, Faculty of medical laboratory science and the university’s teaching hospital.
The university has ten faculties and a postgraduate school. The faculties include Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies, Faculty of Education and Extension services, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Pharmaceutical sciences, Faculty of Veterinary medicine and College of Health Sciences.
The Abdullahi Library Complex is made up of 4 branch libraries. Other than the main library there is the Law library, Medical and Veterinary Sciences library, Pharmaceutical sciences library and School of Matriculation studies library. The umbrella organization for all the clubs and associations is the student’s union. The university encourages students to publish professional and academic based journals and magazines by student associations and clubs.
Accommodation facilities is on a first come first serve basis. Preference is given to Student Union Executives, physically challenged students, Foreign students, Fresh students and final year students.
