Virginia Commonwealth University is a higher education institution for medical education. The university is located in Richmond, Virginia. The university was founded after the merger of the Medical College of Virginia and Richmond Professional Institute. The merger was done by the Virginia General Assembly.

At that time, it was named the Medical Department of Hampden-Sydney College but later on, it became Medical College of Virginia and finally, in 1968 it became 

Virginia Commonwealth University.
