About:

Xiamen University is a first-class, comprehensive university with extensive international influence. The university was founded by Tan Kah Kee, a well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader and was the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese. The university is directly affiliated with the Education Ministry of the five special economic zones and is one of China’s higher-level universities designated for the state key construction of the “211 Project” and the “985 Project”.

 

Faculty:

Xiamen University has a strong team of academic and administrative staff, making it possible to provide a full range of educational programmes. The university has skilled faculty and professional researchers, including 8 academicians of CAS, 1 academician of CAE, and 8 adjunct academicians. Also, 7 faculty members of the university are seated on the State Council’s Academic Degree Appraisal Committee. Xiamen University comprises 1,252 professors and associate professors, including 337 doctoral supervisors, 820 holding a PhD degree, and 786 returned scholars from overseas. The university flaunts over 80 research institutions, including 2 State Key Laboratories, 3 Education Ministry Key Laboratories, 1 Fujian Provincial Engineering Research Centre, 1 Fujian Provincial Research Centre, and 5 state key research bases in humanities and social science. Also, in 2004, the university published 2 research reports in the international Science Magazine.

 

International Collaborations:

Presently, Xiamen University has admirable international connections by establishing co-operative ties with over 170 institutions of higher education worldwide. In 2004, the university has formed a multi-lateral co-operative relationship with 7 universities around the world by signing the agreement on the global U7 consortium. Xiamen University has started 13 Confucius Institutes around the world for promoting international cultural exchanges between China and the other countries of the world. These include the Confucius Institutes at San Diego State University and at Delaware University in the USA, at the University at Cardiff in the UK, at University Trier in Germany, and at L’Uniersite Paris oust Nanterre La defense in France. The university has achieved its goal of “building a high-level university well-known both at home and abroad” by encouraging international students to study in its world-class campus.
